Since the age of 14, Mat has been mixing, scratching, and crafting beats across countless genres and styles—but with one constant: heavy beats and basslines that resonate with diverse audiences.
Hailed by Knowledge Magazine as "awe-inspiring" and "some next-level shit," Mat has toured the globe, performing in 15 countries—from Miami to Moscow—at major events like the US Supercross, the Olympic Games (Torino and Whistler), the X Games, and some of Canada’s largest festivals, with crowds of up to 15,000 people. A true pioneer in the scene, he also spearheaded legendary club nights in Whistler and Vancouver and held a bi-weekly residency at Eye Candy in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas.
Interestingly, OMIII’s first-ever club appearance was as Mat’s opening act back in 2011, after winning a mix competition. Reflecting on that night, OMIII shares, “It was the most nervous I’d ever been for a show. When I spoke to Mat before my set, he asked if I was nervous. I said yes, and he asked if the promoters gave me a bar tab. I said yes! I got completely wasted and played the set. It ended up being one of the best nights of my early days in BC—out with plenty of friends and living the dream of opening for Mat at just 19.”

We recently had the chance to catch up with Mat to hear what he’s been up to and reflect on his incredible journey.

1. What got you into producing and DJing? Is there one that you prefer over the other?
Back in 2022, I went a Flo milli concert at Baxter arena, Omaha Nebraska where a artist named Tai Verde as well Waka Flocka Flame were opening for her. I had no idea what to expect because I had never heard of nor seen Tai Verde perform before. He was amazing! I mean his band, his singing, and presence was radioactive. In the middle of his performance he got really serious and said, "If anyone out there is listening, if there's something you want to do just do go and do it. 6 months ago I was sleeping on my mom's couch and now im touring NA". That really resonanted with me, so later that night I went home, downloaded ableton, and made a beat.I woke up the next morning, rubbed my eyes and thought to myself, "That beat was so trash" and then deleted it. I was started off making hiphop and RnB for a good bit.At the end of 2022 I had went to my first ever rave. It was the ryoko tour by jessica auddifred. The energy in the room was like nothing I had ever seen nor felt. I felt like I knew everyone in the room the way we were all in unison. I thought to myself, "This what I want to do for the rest of my life". As for DJing, I had got moved to japan, met an amazing gal named Pia and her friends who really inspired me want to DJ my own tunes.
2. How did you come up with the name Cardvell?
The name "Cardvell" is actually my middle name with an extra "L"

3. You’ve spent time in different parts of the world, has this effected your outlook on bass music or has it shaped it? Yes! so with that I really only was into 140 dubstep but the more I was introduced to japanese influenced bass music as well european I learned that it's all the same. Dubstep, UKG, Breakbeat, etc... they are all products of influence from the same thing. That knowledge really expanded my tastes in bass music to go beyond just dubstep.
4. Favourite genre and favourite producer atm? My favorite genre will forever and always be dubstep. I'm a 140 guy through and through. It's hard to choose because its a 3 way tie right now but if I had to choose one it would be BukezFinezt 100%

5. Favourite plug-in/ VST atm My favorite plug in right now is a max for live plug in called "GMaudio ducker" by GM Audio. It's a side chaining device but the side chain is unrealistically clean. usually when you sidechain there is some type of sound/artifact coming in too early from the release or if you sidechain too much it sounds weird but with this device, it side chains PERFECTLY leaving no artifacts. It's $15 right now on GM audio's gumroad site. Highly recommend
6. What are some of your go to music channels and labels ? There's like 100+ I go to for new music but my main squeezes as of late have been: DeepTempo 140, White Peach Records, Ternion Selects, SWU FM, and Rinse.FM
7. Favourite animated show or tv series atm? My favorite show right now, that im so pissed that I finished, is called "Dark". I can't say too much because it'll spoil the mess out of it but I will say it's the best and most original plot to be written in the last 20 years. You can find it on Netflix. 8. When you produce, do you have a process or is it mostly what you feel like the day of or is it both? When I start producing, I don't really come in with an idea of what i'm going to make but I do have a way I make every song. I usually start with a super basic drum pattern. starting with the drums help me figure out what kind of energy the song is going to have and then from there I make everything according to the drums. 9. Shoutout to homies or anything that you would like to plug or hype, tell us about it!! Huge shoutout to Ken Combine, without him, I wouldn't have gained my mixing knowledge and confidence to put myself out there more as quickly as I did. Shoutout bitchpia. She is like my mom she took me in as her own when I had no friends in japan and really believed in me and what I was doing. Shoutout all past and present co-workers for being supportive of my goals. shoutout Calvin, both of the Mikeys, Jordan, Raf, Cheeseanista, Dubsonar collective, Dimitri, Crastinate, Section, Chefwamp and all the Dub Den gang, Ben Kowta, Weston Luhv, Hucci, Shiloh, Jeremiah, Nick, Bruce, Taiyo, and anyone who is supporting the project . Next year I have some crazy announcements in regards to label releases and possible upcoming shows in Europe!
